THE FIRST NOVEL IN THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING JANE HAWK SERIES ![]() ![]() ![]() I tend to make changes to the way I’m writing the story, not to the story itself. I’ve never changed the overall architecture of a novel in the middle of building it, but I make changes when I find a better way to do something, a more effective way of moving the story along or creating tension or providing a window into motivation or character. Other approaches work well for other writers. That method suits me and has done for fifteen years as a full-time professional. That means the initial writing is quite slow, but there’s not a lot of re-drafting needed later. When I’m ready to start, I don’t do a quick and dirty first draft, I write a few chapters at a time, then edit them before I move on. I prepare outlines and synopses and chapter plans. I’m one of those writers who plan things out in some detail before they start a new book. The deadline is getting uncomfortably close. I’m writing the last part of a novel with the working title Caller, part three of the Shadowfell series of historical fantasy books intended for a YA/adult crossover readership. She is remarkably crafty in her last-minute escape, and her planning into it made me admire her more. Told mainly from Lia’s POV, we follow her as she flees to a remote village on her wedding day. Even my boys’ listened to the book (quietly) and they would often beg me to go back or explain in detail what they missed. A history was isn’t bumped and a love interest(s) worth swooning over. Beautifully crafted world building with writing so descriptive I can picture myself right along side the main characters(s). It has every element that I love and look forward to when heading into a Fantasy novel. Yet, when I saw it available on Audible I decided to take the plunge. ![]() But we have a weird relationship, one that I am frequently taking a break from. That isn’t to say I don’t like, or even love the genre I do. If there is one thing to know about me, is that Fantasy and I just don’t always get along. I put off reading this book for ages for two reasons, 1) hype and b) its Fantasy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Despite the lack of dangerous beasts, The Forest is animated.
